AFTON ETCYL SMITH

Afton Etcyl Smith, 88, of Louisburg, MO passed away on January 21, 2013 at his residence. He was born on October 12, 1924 in Sycamore, MO the son of Jack and Leila (Pilant) Smith.

On December 20, 1954, Afton was united in marriage to Gary Sue Reed in Stafford, KS. Afton and his family lived in Sugar Creek, MO from 1965 until he retired from U.S. Steel Supply in 1986. He and Sue traveled around, spent several good years in Alabama, before settling in Louisburg, MO in 1995.

He loved playing bluegrass music. He played guitar, but was best known for his mandolin. He played with his brothers, Hack and Junie, and later with his kids, Randy and Laney, and many nieces and nephews. He loved to hunt and fish with his boys and grandkids. His passion was his yard, garden, orchard and land. He loved walking the pasture and spent countless hours building a rock bridge to the pond. He was a family man. He loved his children and grandchildren endlessly and Sue was the light of his life. He was everyone's favorite uncle. His sweet smile and warm hugs will be greatly missed.

Afton is survived by his children Etcyl Ray Smith and life partner Connie Diggs of Sylvia, KS, Randy Wayne Smith and wife Elizabeth of Arlington, KS, Anita Elaine Holden and husband Wes of Independence, MO and Nina Jean Newman and husband Randy of Macks Creek, MO; ten grandchildren: David, Missy, Brandi, Kendra, Corey, Austin, Gibb, Aaron, Shane and Brian; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters Goldie Newton of Gainesville, MO and Violet Newton of Kimberling City, MO; one sister-in-law Gavaughna Smith of Gainesville, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sue; one grandson Kyle Wayne Smith; one great grandson Louis Hendrix; four brothers; one sister; five half sisters and five half brothers.

Funeral services for Afton will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home chapel in Gainesville, MO with Mike Allcorn officiating. Burial will be in the Smith Chapel Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
