Brother, Dominic Pitagora, 83 years
Assumption Abbey, Ava, MO
Brother Dominic Pitagora was born to Anthony and Amelia Pitagora on May 31, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan. At that time, his given name was Robert. Brother Dominic passed from this life into the waiting arms of the Lord, October 24, 2011 at the age of 83 at his home, Assumption Abbey, surrounded by his brothers' love and prayers.
Brother Dominic was a Navy veteran, serving after World War II. In his early years, he was a lithographer, living in Redwood City, California. In 1958 he felt the calling to become a monk and entered into his religious life at New Clairvaux Abbey in California. He took Solemn Vows in 1965 and chose Dominic for his religious name. After thirty years, Brother Dominic spent a year at St. Benedict's Monastery in Colorado, then six months in the new foundation at Taiwan. He then came to Ava in 1990.
He held many different jobs at Assumption Abbey. His most recent was as the buyer for the Abbey. Many of the townspeople remember him for his fruitcake muffins that he took great pride in bringing to town.
Brother Dominic suffered from Parkinson's disease, and then from cancer the last several months of his life. When his brother, Richard, told him that the family sent their love he replied, "How are they sending it?" Brother Dominic kept his sense of humor, even through his illness.
His mother and father and two sisters, Norma Marie Grenier and Mary Jean Garrison, preceded Brother Dominic in death.
He is survived by his brother, Richard and wife Lynne of San Jose, California, his sister Frandora (Francis) Peden of Phoenix, Arizona and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by his brothers at Assumption Abbey. His brothers at the Abbey will miss his presence and dogged persistence against obstacles.
The funeral mass will be held at Assumption Abbey at 10:00am Thursday, October 27, 2011 with burial at the Abbey Cemetery. Please join us in prayers for his repose. Services
