Charles Leroy Downing

Avilla, MO

Charles "Charlie" Leroy Downing, 71 years and 21 days old, passed to Heaven on October 1st, 2016 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, MO.

Charles was born September 10,1945 in Fruita, CO to Lawrence and Verleen (Pettijojohn) Downing.


Charles was an over the road truck driver for Yellow Freight. He also farmed, which was his true passion. He enjoyed working cattle, hunting, fishing, trail rides and camping out. He especially liked spending time with friends and family.

He was an Army Veteran and served during the Vietnam War where he served as a convoy commander and was highly decorated.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Clarence and Lynn.

He is survived by his children, Steven Downing and wife Chally of Carthage, MO, Robert Downing of Reeds, MO, Shelly Schrader and husband True of Stark City, MO, and Collier Downing of Reeds, MO, former wife Sandy Downing of Avilla, MO, fourteen Grandchildren, and many neices, nephews, and other family and friends who will miss him.


Graveside services for Charles will be Thursday, October 6th at 11:30 am in the Turkey Creek cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the funeral home. A celebration of life ceremony will be Wednesday, October 5th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Avilla Baptist Church, Avilla, MO. Officiating will be Rev. Danny Douglas. Memorials may be made to the family as a love offering.
