Obituary

Dorothy Hugi, 100, died peacefully on March 7, 2025 in Gainesville.

Dorothy was born on January 19, 1925 in Thornton, Wyoming the daughter of George and Edith Siemers.

Her mother died when she was 4.  She then lived with relatives in Wyoming until her father was able to take her with him to Moorcroft, Wy.  During her teen years she helped her father, and stepmother print the weekly newspaper in Moorcroft, setting type, etc.

After high school she moved to Kansas City, went to business school, and then worked at a bank.  Through her roommate she met Robert Hugi, and they were married on June 27, 1948, in Pittsburg KS.  They had 3 children.  In addition to being a homemaker, cub scout leader, great cook, and wonderful mother, she helped her husband build the H & R Block business in Minneapolis, MN by keeping the books, and doing the payroll.

Dorothy moved from Minnesota after her husband died, and her youngest child left for college.  She lived in Mtn Home, AR, Florida, and finally in Springfield, MO.

She loved to sew, knit, crochet, and cross stitch.  She spent many hours crafting items for her volunteer work, and family.  She also traveled extensively, enjoyed reading, and going to the theater.  She was somewhat adventurous going up in a hot air balloon on her 80th birthday, and ziplining on her 90th.  She was a lovely, kind woman, and will be missed dearly by friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet and husband Rory Smith of Theodosia, her son Robert, and wife Claire Hugi, grandchildren Christopher, Allison, and Pamela, bonus grandchildren Nikki and Angie, her sister Edra White of Colorado, several great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Hugi, her son Gerald Hugi, her parents George and Edith Siemers, and her stepmother Juanita Siemers.
