Ernest Carl Metcalf, 88 years, 9 months, 17 days old, passed away on November 30, 2021 at his home with family by his side.
Ernest was born February 13, 1933 in Brownbranch, Missouri to William Henry and Samantha Ellen (Swadley) Metcalf.
In the fall of 1955, he worked for Chamers & Baroker Constuction Company building grain elevators starting in Hickok, KS. Then he worked for Phillip and Margene Shorter just North of Ulysses, KS placing irrigation pipes in the irrigation ditches and farming the lands. In 1960, he went to work for Co-op in Ulysses, KS. In 1967, he worked for Johnson Co-op in Stanton County. While trying to open the hatch on the railroad car to fill with grain; he fell off backwards and broke both of his feet (in the instep) and his elbow. After recovery he went back to work for Callingwood Grain in Ryrus, KS as an equipment operator and he also delivered Diesel to the farmers and the railroad. Also he got to drive a Skeeter while at this job to spray fields. In 1979, he worked for Co-op as a grain operator in Caldwell, KS. He was to upgrade the elevator so that they could move grain faster and service more farmers. After 23 years of working for Co-op; he retired in 1995.
On October 23, 1951 Ernest and Dovie Ann Jenkins were united in marriage at Harrison, Arkansas, and they were blessed with five children.
Ernest and Dovie moved to Eucha, Oklahoma in 2005 to be close to family members.
Ernest was a member of the Baptist Church in Brownbranch, MO.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dovie; two sons, Lance Lee Metcalf and his wife Sharon, Tex Clay Metcalf and his wife Beverly Ann; grandchildren, Carolyn Metcalf, Carla Metcalf, Eugene Metcalf, and John Ross McGoldrick; brothers and sisters Tom Metcalf, Paul Metcalf, Delmer Metcalf, Clayborn Metcalf, Warren Metcalf, Rocca Maggard, Gladys Keene, and Arlene Webster.
He is survived by his children, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Connie) Hampton, Mr. and Mrs. Marty (Luann) Metcalf, and Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Tressa) McGoldrick; grandchildren William Metcalf, Nick Hampton, Wendy Shankle, Melissa Hampton, Luanna Stepro, Nicole Robertson, Levi Metcalf, and Mr. and Mrs. Kyle (Tristina) Pittman; multiple great grandchildren and many great great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Ernest will be Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, MO with burial following in the Union Grove Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend Oren Alcorn. Memorials may be made by buying a gift for a complete stranger which is something that Ernest did all the time (Pay It Forward).
