Frank Darnell Smith, 80 of El Dorado, AR, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Medical Center of South Arkansas one day short of 81st birthday.
Born on January 21, 1929 in Depew, MO.; Frank was the only child of Frank and Gladys Swearengin Smith Mize. He graduated from Ava High School in Ava, MO. in 1947. Mr. Smith served in Germany with the Army in the early fifties. Frank was united in marriage to Vivian Lakey on October 10, 1956, and to this union one child was born. Mr. Smith continued his education at the University of Missouri, and completed a degree in agriculture at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO. After which he worked for 10 years at Kraft Foods in Springfield and farmed. Later, Frank worked for Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, OK. He retired after 28 years, in the research and development department. For the past 17 years Mr. Smith has been retired in El Dorado, AR. and enjoying his grandsons.
Mr. Smith served 7 years as a deacon, and 18 years as an elder in the Dewey Church of Christ in Dewey, OK. Frank was an active member of the College Avenue Church of Christ for the past 17 years. He had a passion for the Joy Bus Ministry and World Bible School.
Survivors are his wife of 53 years Vivian Lakey Smith, a daughter Catherine Garrett and husband Bret all of El Dorado, and two grandsons Jared and Lance Garrett.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the College Avenue Church of Christ with Dan Williams, Kent Jobe, and Jason Baker officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Monday, January 25, 2010 at Denlow Cemetery in Denlow, MO. with Bret Garrett officiating.
The family will receive friends at Bailey Funeral Home in El Dorado Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava, MO.
