Gertrude Helen (Blair) McDonald, 91.
Mrs. McDonald passed away Sunday morning, November 1, 2009 in the Christian Heritage Park Convalescent Unit as a result of a head injury sustained in a fall at home the previous Wednesday morning. Her passing was quite unexpected as she had only a few hours earlier been transferred from the acute care facilities of the San Antonio Community Hospital. Both facilities are in Upland, CA quite close to her home in Alta Loma, CA 91701.
Gertrude was born on Halloween in 1918 to John and Ethel Mae (Upson) Blair at home in Arno, MO. She was quite proud of that date. She was married to William McDonald in February of 1944. Both she and her husband were life-long members of churches, the last being the Ava General Baptist Church; and they were both active in the Gideons International organization.
Gertrude was a licensed cosmetologist and owned a beauty shop in Ava before becoming a full-time mother. Years later she would be employed with the Ava School system as a Librarian's Assistant first in the Jr. High and then the Sr. High School libraries.
Gertrude loved sewing and travel. She completed several hand-pieced quilts, the last of which was a "Bessy's Fan" named for a pattern obtained from the late Bessy Kellog of Ava. Wet Macular Degeneration brought an end to her sewing activities in August of 2007. It also severly degraded her ability to enjoy the senery on vacation trips around the country. She was quite amazed that she was able to visit all lower 48 states, the last of which was Delaware on October 4 of this year.
She is survived by her son, Richard, of Alta Loma, CA; her brother-in-law Ulys Schofield, 102, of Isabela, MO; nieces Mary Ann (Hartley) Hathcock of Ava, Ruby (Hartley) Sievert of Squires, Sharon (Hartley) Keeland of Independence, and Clara Belle McDonald of Santa Maria, CA; nephews Gene Schofield of Ozark, Arthur and John Murphy of Independence, Dwayne Murphy of Mtn. Grove, and Robert Schofield of Highlandville.
There will be a short visitation period at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, November 10 at Clinkingbeard's Funeral Home in Ava followed by a chapel service at 10 AM with burial service at the Ava Cemetery afterwards.
Contributions in lieu of flowers are encouraged to either the Gideons International organization or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
