Dr. Hollis Dain Smith

(July 8, 1935 - February 25, 2013)


Hollis Dain "Doc" Smith, 77 years, passed from this life on February 25, 2013 at home with family.

He was born July 8, 1935 in Vanzant, MO to Ramey and Loeta (Estes) Smith. On June 3, 1956, Dain and Dorothy Ann Duffer were united in marriage in Ava, MO.

Dain was a resident of the Ava community since 1990 moving from West Plains, MO where he had lived since 1961. He was a retired Veterinarian. Dain owned and operated the Animal Clinic of West Plains and also the Sho-Me Feeder Pig Markets in Ava and Thayer, MO. He was a 1953 graduate of Ava High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1960 from the University of Missouri, Columbia.


He was a Christian and a current member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Ava and former member of the First Baptist Church in West Plains.


Dain had been an active member of the West Plains and Ava Lion's Club and the Gideon's International. He was also a member of the Missouri Cattleman's Association. He had served on the State of Missouri Clean Air Commission, the Advisory Committee of Agriculture under Governor Kit Bond, and the Douglas County Soil and Water Commission. He was one of the original Board of Director's of the Missouri Southern Bank in West Plains, the General Manager of the National Feeder Pig Show from 1970 to 1980, and the President of the National Feeder Pig Marketing Association. Dain also served in other capacities related to Agriculture and in later years, he enjoyed his farm and raising cattle.


Dain was preceded in death by his parents, Ramey & Loeta Smith. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Smith, Ava, MO, two sons and their spouses, David Dain & Cathy Smith, Ava, MO and Daniel Keith & Turmelovea Smith, Baton Rouge, LA; four grandchildren, Jessica LeAnn Bennett, Joshua Dain Smith and Danielle Elizabeth Smith all of Springfield, MO and Lain Smith, Baton Rouge, LA; one brother, Paul Smith, Silver Springs, MD; two nephews, Ray and Paul Smith and their families.

Funeral services for Dain will be Friday, March 1, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. in the First Southern Baptist Church, Ava, MO with burial in the Ava Cemetery. Officiating will be Randy Hylton and Pastor Tom Maples. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO. Memorials may be made to Gideons or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
