James Boyd VanHouden, 74 years, 7 months, and 23 days old, departed this life on January 1, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, MO with his family by his side.
Boyd was born May 9, 1940 in Ava, MO to Ruben and Alice (Kellogg) VanHouden.
On March 9, 1963 Boyd and Lena Duckworth were united in marriage in Ava, MO and to this union two children were born.
Boyd served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years. He retired from Sweetheart Cup Co. in 2002 after 36 years. Boyd loved all outdoor activities; farming, hunting, fishing, especially the fall deer hunting with his son, grandsons and friends. He also loved the changing of the seasons and the beauty of it all.
He attended church at Ava General Baptist Church. Boyd was a loving husband and devoted to his two children and four grandchildren.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Leon and a grandson, Jacob Boyd.
Boyd is survived by his wife, Lena VanHouden, Springfield, MO, his daughter, Kalynn & Gary McMurray, Spokane, MO, his son, Jason VanHouden, Springfield, MO, four grandchildren, Shelby McMurray, Cody McMurray, currently serving in the U.S.Army overseas, Rachelle McMurray and Jaron VanHouden, he is also survived by a daugher-in-law, Amy VanHouden, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Boyd will be Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, 3:00 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO with burial in the Ava Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Oren Alcorn. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
