Vergil Leroy Melton
On January 28, 2011, Vergil Leroy Melton, age 76, of Ava, Missouri, went peacefully into the arms of God at his home with his family by his side. Leroy was born to Vergil and Velma (Rosseau) Melton on November 17, 1934, in Merriett, Missouri.
Leroy was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving his country during the Korea Conflict. He traveled the world during his ten years in the military. Leroy retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Leroy took great pride in serving his country.
On August 31, 1963, Leroy was united in marriage to Betty Lisby. Theirs was a marriage of true understanding filled with love. They were soul mates, leaning on one another, bearing one another's weaknesses, and growing from the other's strengths. They knew a marriage took three, with God being the most important link to their 48 years together. With God's guidance their marriage grew and matured each and every day. This union was blessed with two children, one daughter, Elizabeth and husband Mike Box, of Ava and one son, David and wife Brooke Melton, of Ava; five grandchildren, Sarah (Box) and husband Sam Evans, Aaron Box, and Jimmy, Mallory, and Fisher Melton. He leaves behind one brother, Bob and wife Sue Melton, of Ava. He also leaves behind one special nephew, Kirk Holbert, and two special nieces, Maria Page and Rena Taylor, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Leroy was a humble, hard-working man of integrity. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the great outdoors, coin collecting, and sharing a good story. Leroy believed our greatest wealth on this earth was family and each family member had a special place in his heart. He was a Christian and this gives us great comfort in knowing we will see him again. Leroy leaves behind a legacy that is too great to put into words.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO with the Rev. Buddy Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery with Military Honors by Ava American Legion #112 and VFW #5993. Memorials may be made to Ava Assembly of God Church.
