Ava, MO
Lester Emmett Thurman, 87 years, 7 months, and 15 days old, passed to his Heavenly home on March 5, 2016 at Riverways Manor in Van Buren, MO with his wife, Lorene and family by his side.
Lester was born July 21, 1928 in Sweden, MO in Douglas County to George C. and Fila Florence (Dye) Thurman.
On January 29, 1949 Lester and Eva Lorene Elliott were united in marriage in Douglas County, MO and to this union two daughters, Debra and Paula were born.
Lester was a retired Supervisor with the Missouri State Highway Department. He served for over 30 years in the Van Buren and Douglas & Ozark County MO areas. Lester was a member of the Ava General Baptist Church. He had served as a Deacon for 29 years in the church. He had also served as a Deacon at the Center Point General Baptist Church in Gainesville, MO for several years before moving to Van Buren, MO. There he also served in that church. Wherever Lester was living he was serving. His servanthood in church also included song leading and Sunday School Superintendent.
His hobbies were; farming and tinkering in his shop and spending time with his family. Lester loved his Lorene and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents.
Lester is survived by his wife Lorene of the home, two daughters and their spouses, Debra & Bob Guffey, Gainesville, MO and Paula & Max Ross, Van Buren, MO, four grandchildren, Justin Guffey, Blake Guffey and wife, Lindsay, Misty Burke and husband, Robbie, and Tiffany Gossett and husband, Colby, three great grandchildren, Hailey, and Kale Burke and Gracey Gossett,
one sister, Golda Stout, Springfield, MO, many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Lester will be Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO with burial in the Ava Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to service time in the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Oren Alcorn. Memorials may be made to his granddaughter's charity organization, Lending A Hand, P.O. Box 734, Van Buren, MO 63965.
