Pete was born on July 2, 1943 in Manhattan, NY, to Joseph and Leana (Hibberd) McLaren. He was a resident of Ozark County for the past 28 years. He was living in his dream home on Bull Shoals Lake. Pete and Carolyn "Cookie" McLaren were united in marriage on April 12, 1960. Together they were privileged to share 46 wonderful years together. His proudest accomplishments were his children, grandchildren, great grandchild, and his Special Olympics athletes. He was a lifetime volunteer for the Special Olympics, serving as coach, mentor, driver, and cheerleader. His basketball skills team, nicknamed the Onagers, brought home many gold medals. He could bring out the best in each athlete and help them achieve more than they thought they could accomplish.
Pete was a taxman, farmer, business owner, and collector. He enjoyed traveling to see his children and grandchildren. His hobbies included playing cards, reading, watching movies, and spoiling his grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cookie, his father Joseph, and his daughter Teresa. He is survived by his daughters, Betsy McLaren; Barbara Bormolini and her husband John; his son Peter McLaren and his wife Tracie; four grandchildren and one great grandchild; his girlfriend Pamela Shamblin; three sisters Janet, Dorothy and Susan; his brother Jim McLaren; his long-time friend, Mary Fry; his Special Olympics family and a host of wonderful friends.
His personal philosophy was to always do the right thing, even if it means not getting to do what you want all the time. His example touched many lives.
Memorials may be made to the South Central Association of Special Athletes through Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Gainesville, MO.
