Robert Joseph Balsavich, 84, Isabella, MO, passed away on September 25, 2010 at the Gainesville Healthcare Center, Gainesville, MO. He was born on September 9, 1926 in Chicago, IL, the son of Joseph and Helen (Baltrakonus) Balsavich.
Robert was a veteran having proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was involved in the Adm. Byrd expedition to the South Pole "Operation High Jump" in 1947. On July 19, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Rauch in National City, CA and to this union three children were born.
Robert worked for the Chicago Belt Railway as an engineer and fireman and later worked as a police officer. He drove a tanker for Texaco for many years, retiring as Assistant Plant Manager in San Diego, CA. Robert was best known, however, for his accordion music. He played at various events, including the Senior Center and music parties. He was a lifetime member of VFW, Isabella Post 5366. Robert was an usher and a member of St. Williams Catholic Church in Gainesville, MO.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen Balsavich; one sister Arlene Puchalski; and one daughter-in-law Mary Balsavich. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of the home in Isabella, MO; two daughters Susan Gomez and her husband Tony of Spring Valley, CA, Janis Forte and her husband Matt of National City, CA; one son Robert Balsavich of Encinitas, CA; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother Richard Balsavich of Grant Pass, OR; and a host of friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the St. Williams Catholic Church in Gainesville, MO with Father Paul Wightman officiating. Cremation services are under the care and direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Gainesville, MO.
