ROBERT (Bob) W. MARTIN

Robert (Bob) W. Martin, 101 years young, passed away at home in Gainesville surrounded by his niece and nephew Beth and Joe Drobezko and family, March 8, 2016. Bob was born November 11, 1914 in West Allis, WI to George W. Martin and Anna Munch.

Working at Allis-Chalmers as line inspector, he heeded the call to serve after Pearl Harbor, December 1941 and was inducted March 1942 into the US Army at Ft Sheridan with follow-on basic at Ft FE Warren. Deployed to Hawaii, Bob's unit took part in Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations, July 1942 – March 1943 with Corporal Bob Martin a qualified Driver and Mechanic with the 279th Ordnance, Maintenance Company. His Company then returned to CONUS for intensive training prior to entering the European Theater of Operations (ETO). The 279th Ordnance, Maintenance Company later deployed to England for final D-Day buildup. Along with thousands of men and tons of war materiel, Bob went ashore at Normandy (Utah Beach) D+5 (days). During the push to Germany, Bob and three others volunteered for special duty for high priority equipment delivery and often returned with non-operational equipment from our forward Allied positions. Also, they experienced a delayed redeployment to assist with post-war de-armament action and later returning to CONUS by ship from Marseilles, France to NYC, NY November 1945. Discharged from the US Army at Ft Sheridan, IL Nov 24, 1945, he in turn married Helen Irene Cupec Dec 8, 1945. Subsequently rehired at Allis-Chalmers as line inspector, he and Helen built their house together and lived in West Allis for the next thirty years. They retired to their Lake Winnebago "cabin" and traveled much of their beloved USA. He is a Life Member of VFW and American Legion. Bob Martin's Campaigns include: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes.

Funeral arrangements made through Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Gainesville, MO and Robert W. Martin will be laid to rest with his beloved Helen at Rienzi Cemetery near Fond Du Lac, WI. In lieu of flowers and cards, Bob's wishes were that any assistance be given to fellow Veterans or The Salvation Army.
