Troy Trellis Herd, 87 years young, passed gently to a better place and gained his freedom from all life's trials on Independence Day, July 4, 2013 at Cox Medical Center after a brief illness.
Troy was born April 12, 1926 near Isabella, Missouri to Fate and Sally (Delp) Herd. Troy and Imogene Duckworth were married hours before their high school graduation May 6, 1943 in Judge Pitt's office at the Ava courthouse. They recently celebrated their seventieth anniversary.
Troy was a World War II veteran, having served in the U. S. Army Infantry in the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan.
Troy worked hard, sometimes three jobs at a time, all his life. He owned a milk route, co-owned a service station, worked at Ava Lumber and, finally retired early from Sanders Rock Products to have more time to enjoy his grandchildren, Jason and Sarah Moody.
At retirement, Troy began his career of volunteer service to the community. He delivered Meals of Wheels for over twenty years, donated multiple gallons of blood, assisted American Legion Post 112 members in providing military funeral services for veterans, setting VA markers for fallen comrades, posting flags on holidays and government observances, supervising lending of medical equipment from the Legion and renting of Legion facilities. Troy was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His service to the community and to American Legion Post 112 will be greatly missed.
Troy is survived by his wife, Gene of the home; daughter Susie and husband Charlie Moody of Marshfield, Missouri; grandson Jason Moody of Olathe, Kansas; grand daughter Sarah and her husband Marshal of Chesterfield, Missouri; sister, Marie Dickey of Ava, Missouri and sister-in-law, Norma Hodges of Oakgrove, Missouri as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Missouri, has arranged cremation. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in Springfield Veterans Cemetery. At Troy's request, no formal services will be held. A casual Celebration of Life will occur at a later date at the American Legion building.
In lieu of flowers, Troy asked that any memorial contributions go to disaster relief funds, children's assistance agencies, or to American Legion Post 112.
