Veta Coonts
Ava, Missouri
Veta (Hurst) Coonts passed away peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 29, 2007 at 10:15 P.M. at Heart of the Ozarks Care Center in Ava, MO and is now at home with Jesus. Veta would have been 88 years of age on Nov. 14.
Veta was born on Nov. 14, 1919 near Gentryville, MO, the daughter of Harmon and Delpha (Smith) Hurst, one of 7 children.
On Dec. 23, 1941 Veta was married to Harley Coonts in Mansfield, MO. This union was blessed with three daughters, Kay, Dovie and Reba. Harley and Veta lived on their farm near Gentryville in Eastern Douglas County until moving to Ava when they sold the farm. Veta loved the farm and moving to town was a big adjustment for her. She had been a cook at Rockbridge Trout Farm. She loved to cook for family and friends, especially hot rolls and her lemon pie was delicious! She also enjoyed gardening with Harley, quilting and canning, especially apples from the tree in the back yard.
Veta had made Heart of the Ozarks her home for the past few years after failing health made it impossible for her to stay in her home. She loved her caregivers, many who treated her like their own Mom. Veta was a Christian and had faithfully attended Gentryville Church of God and later Happy Home Church after moving to town.
Veta was preceded in death by her husband, Harley, on July l7, 1989, her parents and two brothers, Raymond and Lester. Her survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, Kay and Harlin Johnson, Dovie and Alvie Dooms; Reba and Don Bishop, all of Ava, MO, one grandson, Kris Bishop, the delight of her life, of Springfield, MO, one sister, Grace Coonts of Davenport, Iowa, three brothers, John Hurst, Davenport, Iowa, Ray and Bill Hurst, Bradleyville, MO, several nieces and nephews and many friends and neighbors.
She was a loving wife, mother, "me maw", sister and friend to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed.
