Virginia L. Pettit

Virginia Louise Givans Pettit, 89, departed this life at 5:45PM on Tues., May 29, 2012, at her home at Greenfield Senior Living in Oak Ridge, TN.

She was born on July 26, 1922, in Ava, Missouri, to Wm. Franklin and Blanche Lytle Givans. She graduated from Ava High School in 1940.

On Oct. 15, 1943, she married Bill H. Pettit, her high school sweetheart, who was home on leave from the US Marine Corps. He went back to San Diego, CA, and she went back to the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1944. She was the school nurse for 1,700 children in the Ava Public Schools for 17 years.

After their retirement, she and Bill moved to Springfield, MO, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1993. Bill died on Aug. 31, 1996. In January, 2002, Virginia moved to Oak Ridge, TN. She was active in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and the St. Stephen's Piecemakers. She enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, and playing Hand and Foot, Scrabble, and other word and board games.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Bill, and her brother, Robert Lytle Givans.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Pettit Felton and her husband, Rear Admiral Lewis A. Felton, USN (ret.) of Oak Ridge, TN, and Susan Pettit of Harpswell, Maine, and a son, Robert L. Pettit and his wife, Sandy Wilson, of Round Hill, VA. She is also survived by four much-loved grandchildren, David M. Felton of Oak Ridge, TN, W. Christopher Pettit and his wife, Mary Beth Godley-Pettit of Gaithersburg, MD, Sara Susan Pettit of Washington, DC, and Andrew S. Pettit of New York, NY, as well as thirteen nieces, one nephew, and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge on Sat., June 9, with the Rev. Dr. G. David Lovett officiating. Another service will be held in Ava on Sat., July 21, at 2:00PM at the Ava United Methodist Church, with Bishop Glen Hartley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Oren Alcorn and the Rev. Marty Blakey. Interment of ashes in the Ava Cemetery will follow.



In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Douglas Co. Public Library, the Douglas Co. Historical Society, the Alzheimer's Association, or the donor's favorite charity. Services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, MO.
